PEN Zimbabwe aims at creating the space for literature, language, ideas, opinions, debate in diversity mainly in gender and political diversity issues and dialogue to flourish and also the creation of opportunities for diverse, dissenting and unknown writers to be heard.
Location: Harare, Zimbabwe
Pen Zimbabwe, an Association of writers, is a local chapter affiliated to PEN International headquartered in London. The aims of Pen Zimbabwe among other things are to:
· Promote Literary Diversity
· Create a forum for great literary conversations
· Nurture and grow the art of writing
· Bring creative minds together
· Defending Freedom of expression.
PEN Zimbabwe aims at creating the space for literature, language, ideas, opinions, debate in diversity mainly in gender and political diversity issues and dialogue to flourish and also the creation of opportunities for diverse, dissenting and unknown writers to be heard.
As it stands right now, the space for dissent in Zimbabwe is highly restricted as evidenced by past and recent clampdowns on artists and cultural groups. As one of its aims, PEN Zimbabwe is keen to put a hand towards influencing the government to comply with the obligation to protect freedom of expression as protected in the Zimbabwean Constitution and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) to which Zimbabwe is a State party.
