PEN stands for the principle of unhampered transmission of thought within each nation and between all nations, and members pledge themselves to oppose any form of suppression of freedom of expression in the country and community to which they belong, as well as throughout the world wherever this is possible.

PEN is a global organization of writers fighting for freedom of speech.

Danish PEN is a subdivision of PEN International. Among its members are authors, journalists, translators, editors, and publishers.

PEN International was founded in London in 1921 and is the world’s first NGO. Today, the organization has national centers in more than 100 countries and a range of centers formed by exiled writers.

PEN is a champion for freedom of speech. It establishes bonds between writers of all nationalities and seeks to preserve the global literary heritage.

Danish PEN was founded in 1924 and cooperates with PEN International.

Danish PEN is one of the ten most active PEN-centers in the world. A major part of the work is dedicated to seeking justice on behalf of imprisoned colleagues.
