As well as his essays which attempt to highlight the multiple destructions of the environment, the environmental rights of citizens, and the protection of the natural bases of existence.

Mohamed Magani, born in El Attaf, Algeria, is a novelist, essayist. He is the author of 16 books in French and a collection of short stories in English, including the novels La Faille du ciel, which won the Grand Prix Littéraire International de la Ville d’Alger, Esthétique de boucher, Un Temps berlinois, Le Refuge des ruines, Une Guerre se meurt, Scène de pêche en Algérie, La Fenêtre rouge, Rue des perplexes, Prix Coup de Cœur de l’Escale littéraire de la Ville d’Alger Prize, 2014, Quand passent les âmes errantes, Mention spéciale du Prix Maghreb/Méditerrrannée, Paris, 2016, L’Année miraculeuse, as well as the new novel, Un Etrange chagrin.

In 1995–2000 he was “writer in exile” and  “writer-in-residence” in Berlin, at the invitation of the International Parliament of Writers and the city of Berlin. He is a former Board member of PEN International. His works have been translated into German, Italian, Spanish, and English. He lives in Algiers and teaches at the university.

His latest novels encapsulate a frank orientation and concern with the ecological issue, absent or lost of sight in contemporary Algerian literature. As well as his essays which attempt to highlight the multiple destructions of the environment, the environmental rights of citizens, and the protection of the natural bases of existence. He participated in national and international meetings on “Literature and environment” in Algiers, Tokyo and Seoul. He is currently participating, through writings in the Algerian press, in the “rescue” of mountains threatened with disappearance by the proliferation of aggregate quarries.
