Copenhagen Architecture Festival (CAFx)

Festival

CAFx is a place that explores, discusses and disseminates architectural and urban challenges through a number of initiatives.

Location: Copenhagen, Denmark

Website

The goal is to challenge the field of architecture and promote critical thinking, inspire, engage and raise public awareness of how architecture and urban planning shape our lives and the world – and how our lives and the world affect the other way around. Architecture is not just bricks, spaces and frames. It's sensual, bodily and social. It is political, historical and psychological. The architecture is human and it affects every aspect of life.

In 2015, the festival won the Academic Architects' Association's Lille Arne in 2015

"... to think about the dissemination of architecture, highlight its qualities and diversity, and create relevant debate".

In 2019, the founder of the festival, Josephine Michau, received the Henning Larsen Foundation's award for

".. its tireless and fascinating commitment to understanding, communicating and involving people in the landscape architecture represents for our lives... For us in Henning Larsen's foundation, there is a nice and straight line between Henning Larsen's early efforts to spread and open up the field of architecture and Josephine Michau's contemporary and impressive efforts to do the same, but with new angles and in new media."

CAF× Festival

CAFx is primarily scandinavia's largest annual architecture festival, which since its establishment in 2014 through lectures, exhibitions, field trips, debates, an extensive film programme, etc., every year focuses on the places where the transformations of architecture are crossed with life. The festival depicts visions, conflicts and historical changes in the built environment, and explores the boundaries between aesthetics, function and identity. The way there is based on collaborations across disciplines, practices and experiences.

CAFx also facilitates annual "Summer Schools" with an experimental focus on the relationship between film and spaces. Under a new annual thematic framework, participants from all over the world gather either digitally or in Denmark for an intensive research course that culminates in the production of a number of new experimental short films. CAFx Summer Schools has been run annually since 2016 at a new location each year. Film has since CAFx' start in 2014 been an important part of the festival's DNA.

In 2015, the festival was expanded to include Aarhus Architecture Festival (AAFx), and in 2016 Aalborg Architecture Festival (ALAFx) took place for the first time. In 2018, Odense Architecture Festival (OAFx) joined.

The festival is part of the pan-European network Future Architecture Platform and in 2017 we contributed to the programme for European City of Culture Aarhus 2017.
